The Issue

The introduction of a 24-hour bus lane in Church Street, Enfield town centre, has brought unintended consequences that must be addressed for the benefit of our community. While the intention may have been to streamline public transport, the reality on the ground tells a different story.

Living and working in Enfield town, I have witnessed firsthand the disruption caused by this change. Instead of improving traffic flow, the constant operation of the bus lane around the clock has led to significant congestion, especially during peak times and when deliveries coincide with bus schedules. This isn't just an inconvenience—it's a risk to safety. Emergency services are hindered by the lack of room to navigate through congested lanes, and their response times could be critical.

Despite these clear impacts, no effective contingency planning was evident during the implementation of the bus lane. Recent incidents have highlighted this failure, with regular traffic jams and tailbacks becoming a norm, a situation previously unheard of in our town centre. Local businesses, residents, and commuters are all experiencing the negative effects of this poorly planned change.

Additionally, the promise of improved public transport efficacy falls flat when buses themselves are frequently caught in the gridlock they were supposed to bypass.

We believe that Enfield deserves a more practical and thoughtful approach to town planning, one that considers the needs of all road users, not just a single aspect of transport. It's crucial to explore alternative solutions that harmonize the flow of all traffic while ensuring the efficiency of our public transportation system.

Join us in petitioning our local council to remove the 24-hour bus lane in Church Street, Enfield town centre, and work toward a better solution that accommodates everyone.
