Remove TFL's 24hr Bus Lane in St. Helier Ave or provide residents with private driveways.

The Issue

I am a resident of St. Helier Avenue, writing on behalf of many frustrated neighbors regarding Transport for London’s (TfL) recent implementation of a 24-hour bus lane. We were not properly informed of the consultation outcomes, nor given a fair chance to express our concerns, as face-to-face meetings were canceled. This decision was made unilaterally, without collaboration with our local council, leaving many completely unaware until we contacted the councillors after a sudden letter was received through our letterbox about works starting effective immediately. It is clear TFL had already made their minds up regardless of the outcome narrative which they have tailored to their own benefit.

Rather than easing congestion and improving road safety as TfL promised, we have instead seen increased rush-hour traffic, road rage and frustration by all (commuters and residents alive). Additionally, the removal of parking spaces has made it extremely difficult for residents to park near their homes. Many homeowners are even willing to fund their own driveways, yet this option has been ignored time and time again as TfL refuse to allow the council to even discuss this option. There is ample space in front of many people's houses where they are willing to spend the required money to have a drive. The house prices will also be affected by this ridiculous need to have a 24 hour bus lane (the speed limit reduction was enough!!) and also by the lack of parking.

This situation is causing serious distress and inconvenience. We demand that TfL take immediate action—either by reinstating resident parking or reconsidering the 24-hour bus lane. Furthermore, future decisions must be made transparently, with genuine engagement between TfL, the local council, and residents. A proper consultation process is essential to ensure all voices are heard, especially those of elderly and offline residents.

It’s time for TfL to acknowledge our concerns and act in the best interest of St. Helier Avenue residents. Sign our petition today to support a fair, well-planned, and balanced solution for our community.
