Remove synthetic chemical fragrances from popular retailers

Remove synthetic chemical fragrances from popular retailers
The Issue
My personal journey over the last decade has opened my eyes to the health hazards posed by synthetic fragrances. Whether shopping at major retailers like Goodwill, Gym's like Gold's or staying at hotels, I've experienced debilitating symptoms: difficulty breathing, migraine headaches, dizziness, and nausea. These physical reactions are not just minor annoyances; they're indicative of the broader health threats posed by synthetic fragrances used in many of our public spaces.
Scientific research supports my personal experiences. Synthetic fragrances are more than just sensory distractions—they're threats to our health. These compounds can act as endocrine disruptors and carcinogens, contributing to a host of health issues ranging from respiratory irritation and headaches to long-term chronic conditions like cancer. A study published in the journal "Air Quality, Atmosphere & Health" reports that over one-third of the population experiences health problems when exposed to these fragrances.
Moreover, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has found that many synthetic fragrances contain phthalates, compounds that have been linked to developmental and reproductive toxicity.
Many modern fragrances contain "FOREVER CHEMICALS" like PFAS because used to make scents last longer and bind to skin and fabrics. These chemicals are hidden from labels under the legal “fragrance” trade secret loophole, allowing hundreds of ingredients, including PFAS, to be undisclosed. Even low “trace” levels matter because PFAS bioaccumulate in the body and are linked to hormone disruption, immune harm, and cancer.
Despite these findings, synthetic fragrances do not have to disclose their chemical ingredients and continue to be widely used in public spaces, putting countless individuals at risk, including vulnerable populations like children and the elderly.
What can be done? Retailers have the power to make impactful changes to protect their customers. We urge popular retailers such as Goodwill, Muji, Samsung, and Walmart to eliminate synthetic chemical fragrances from their products and in-store environments. By opting for natural alternatives like essential oils or simply fragrance-free, retailers can provide safer shopping experiences for everyone.
This change is not only beneficial for individual health but also for public welfare. Creating fragrance-free policies can significantly improve air quality in indoor spaces, create more inclusive environments for those with sensitivities, and set a precedent for industries at large to prioritize consumer health.
I urge you to consider the implications of continued synthetic fragrance usage and join me in demanding change.
Please sign this petition to help push for a safer, healthier, and more accommodating retail experience. Together, we can drive the movement towards a chemical - free, easy breathing future.
