The Issue

As a resident of Downers Grove, Illinois, I have become increasingly concerned about the pervasive presence of Flock surveillance cameras in our community. These cameras, which are designed to capture and store data on individuals without their consent, have been installed throughout our town, monitoring our every move without our permission. This invasion of privacy is unacceptable and goes against the core values of freedom and respect for individual rights that our community stands for.

Flock cameras, known for their ability to track vehicle movements, recognize license plates, and compile detailed records, are active throughout Downers Grove. These devices transform our peaceful neighborhoods into a monitored zone, infringing on our right to privacy and painting a picture of discomfort and anxiety amongst residents. This form of surveillance raises suspicions about the extent of data collection, retention, and its potential misuse.

Numerous studies have shown that such invasive surveillance practices do not significantly contribute to reducing crime rates. According to the 2019 study by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, these technologies often lead to over-surveillance of minority communities and do not fill the gap when it comes to effective policing. Instead, they instill fear and mistrust, leading to a divided community rather than fostering a safe environment.

Our objective is to safeguard our community's rights and ensure that Downers Grove remains a place where privacy is respected. We demand the immediate removal of existing Flock cameras and the banning of future installations of any such data-gathering surveillance apparatus. By doing this, we aim to protect our town from becoming a surveillance state and preserve the personal freedoms that are vital to our democratic society.

I implore the Downers Grove Village Board and local government to heed the voices of its citizens and take prompt action to dismantle these intrusive technologies. Our town's security should not come at the cost of our privacy and personal liberties. Join us in this significant cause to preserve Downers Grove as a secure, yet privacy-respecting, community. Sign this petition to voice your opinion and to stand for the protection of our individual freedoms.
