The Issue

As a resident of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, I have seen firsthand the challenges that arise when limited parking spaces are taken away by for-profit bike-sharing stations. In my neighborhood, we've already lost 10 to 15 parking spots, making it increasingly difficult for those of us who rely on our vehicles. As someone who works night shifts and dedicates 16 to 18 hours a day to my job, I find myself spending an additional hour and fifteen minutes just to find a parking spot. This is simply not sustainable.

Bay Ridge is a community comprised of hard-working middle-class families. Spaces for our vehicles are essential, not just for convenience but for the quality of life. Parking demands are valid concerns for residents who need their cars to commute, especially to places that are not always accessible by public transportation. The introduction of Citi Bike stations in our neighborhood, which primarily serve the convenience of a small group at the expense of many, is disrupting our way of life.

The roads on which Citi Bike stations are placed are publicly funded, and it seems unjust that a private company should profit by acquiring these valuable spaces. Additionally, there are safety risks involved with the reduced parking availability. In desperation to find parking, drivers are engaging in risky behaviors such as parking in front of fire hydrants, which can potentially block emergency services and compromise public safety.

It's not uncommon to see unused or broken bikes occupying these docks, further highlighting the inefficiencies of this system in our area. The residents of Bay Ridge deserve solutions that prioritize their needs and safety over profit.

We call on our local officials to reevaluate the placement of Citi Bike stations in our neighborhood and to consider alternative locations that do not compromise our limited parking spaces. Options could include moving bike racks to less congested areas or introducing bike stations near major transit hubs where they are likely to be utilized more efficiently.

Please sign this petition to support the removal of the Citi Bike station in Bay Ridge and advocate for a balanced approach that respects our community's needs and ensures safe, accessible parking for all residents.
