Remove religious declaration on Mauritian certificates

The Issue

Born in Mauritius 60 years ago, I have seen firsthand how the mandatory declaration of religious belief on birth certificates and other official documents has fostered division in our society. My heart aches as I witness the erosion of mutual respect among fellow Mauritians, all because our identity is being influenced by what should be a private belief. This practice has perpetuated a 'divide and rule' mentality, allowing religious affiliations to shape opportunities, social interactions, and even political decisions.

In a country known for its cultural diversity and mosaic heritage, no religious group should be considered superior or inferior. Our identity as Mauritians should be the unifying factor, not our individual religious beliefs. The current requirement to declare this at birth, before a person can even form their own beliefs, is outdated and unjust.

To forge a united future, we need to eliminate these divisions at their roots. We propose the removal of the religious declaration requirement on birth certificates and all other official documents in Mauritius. This change will promote a national identity that is inclusive of all beliefs, a society where mutual respect and equality reign, irrespective of any individual's faith.

Adopting this change will directly address the social divides based on religion, allowing for a community that thrives on peace, acceptance, and mutual growth. It’s time to break away from policies that separate us and embrace a system that draws strength from our rich diversity.

Mauritius stands at a crossroads. We have the opportunity to choose unity over division, love over segregation, and progress over stagnation. We must act now to ensure our future generations grow up in a society free from religious bias, one that recognizes them solely for their character and contribution.

Join me in this vital movement to reshape our nation. Let us stand together to advocate for the removal of religious declarations from official paperwork, reminding our leaders that our belonging as Mauritians is defined not by creed but by our shared humanity and aspirations.

Please, sign this petition today to help build a more inclusive Mauritius for tomorrow.
