Remove political propaganda from classroom

The Issue

Being a student at Daniel Pearl Magnet High School, I have a deep respect and admiration for the legacy of Daniel Pearl, a man who stood for tolerance, understanding, and truth. As a member of a small group of Jewish students, I expect my school environment to reflect these values and offer a space where all students feel safe and respected, irrespective of their backgrounds and beliefs.

Recently, I have felt uncomfortable in my chemistry class due to the use of political propaganda that promotes a pro-Palestinian stance. Despite raising concerns about how this content disrupts the impartiality expected in an educational setup and how it particularly affects me as a Jewish student, these materials remain. Our school should be a sanctuary for learning, free from divisive political messaging that might alienate any student. It is also worthy to note that in addition to the political propaganda, on the whiteboard a massive "Free Palestine" poster was drawn and off to the side, an antisemetic message was kept up there for more than 3 days that pointed to the propaganda message that said, "Oy Vey, for free?" We are blessed with an educational system that can inspire and nurture us, yet it becomes less effective when classrooms turn into platforms for political discourse that favor one ideology over others. I believe it is crucial for educators to remain neutral in their teachings and classroom decorations to foster inclusion and respect among all students.

Let's urge the administration at Los Angeles Unified School District to enforce a policy where classrooms remain neutral spaces. This includes the removal of any and all politically charged posters and statements, ensuring an academic environment driven by diversity, respect, and genuine learning. Sign this petition to help make our school a place where every student feels welcomed and valued, true to the legacy of Daniel Pearl himself. Your support can promote the values of tolerance and understanding that our school and Daniel Pearl stand for. Please sign and share this petition to bring about a positive, impactful change.
