Remove 'no trucks in the left lane' law on Florida interstates
The Issue
I am a longtime heavy haul truck driver, and I’m fed up with being confined to the two right lanes with very limited opportunities to get around drivers traveling under the speed limit in both the center and right lanes. This situation is not only frustrating but dangerous, as it often hampers the flow of traffic, causing unnecessary tension and potential hazards on the highway. Law enforcement often overlooks the "slow traffic keep right" rule, resulting in regular citations for truck drivers like myself trying to safely navigate past slow-moving vehicles.
The current legislation that prohibits trucks from using the left lane on major interstates in Florida is counterproductive. While the intention might have been to streamline traffic, in reality, it complicates the situation. When slower vehicles clog the right and center lanes, trucks have no choice but to remain stuck, often leading to accidents and road rage incidents due to frustration.
Statistics indicate that flow obstruction is a significant cause of accidents on Floridian highways. Furthermore, reports show that trucks relegated to the right lanes contribute to congestion and increased travel time. Other states that allow trucks to access all lanes have noticed an improvement in traffic fluidity and a reduction in incidents caused by impatient drivers.
In many cases, there's simply no enforcement of "move over" laws for slower vehicles, which should encourage keeping these drivers out of faster lanes. Instead, truck drivers are punished for trying to maintain a safe and efficient pace in their travels. Allowing trucks to have access across all lanes during specific times, or in areas of high congestion, would be a more sensible solution.
By revisiting and amending this outdated rule, Florida could improve safety and efficiency on its roads. Studies suggest the benefits of allowing larger vehicles more freedom to move safely within traffic can lead to better traffic management overall.
I urge Florida lawmakers and transportation officials to reconsider this law and adopt measures that both prioritize safety and improve traffic flow. Join me in demanding change for a safer and more practical solution for all road users. Sign this petition to remove the "no trucks in the left lane" law on Florida's interstates.
