As a student at Martinsville High School (MHS), I experience firsthand the frustration and injustice of the current dress code that prohibits wearing leggings. This rule, which seems outdated and unnecessary, disproportionately affects female students, limiting their comfort and freedom of expression. The policy not only restricts individuality but also perpetuates a culture where students are judged on appearances rather than their talents and abilities.

Leggings are not merely a fashion statement; they are a comfortable and practical clothing option that allows students to focus on what truly matters—our education. This  new dress code policy is more of a distraction than the clothing it targets, leading to wasted time in enforcement and embarrassment for students.

Additionally, the rigid dress code at MHS ignores the contemporary shift in mainstream outfits. Leggings are widely accepted in professional settings and other educational institutions, further proving their legitimacy as a sensible choice for school attire. Numerous studies and reports show that strict dress codes can negatively impact students' self-esteem and academic performance by shifting attention to their appearance rather than their schoolwork.

Not only does it disregard the student bodies’ ability to express themselves, it is another hurdle that female students have to jump through to get ready in the morning. This new rule is deeply rooted in misogyny and pedophilia and how men react around teenage girls should not be on us, the consequences should be held against the men and boys who cannot control themselves around a minor or a classmate. There are many people who are in situations where they only own leggings and can’t afford anything else, and this rule directly inhibits their ability to go to school if they are in fear of getting dress coded. Everyone’s bodies develops differently, and one dress code can not be adhered to an entire student body when we are at such a developmental age and everyone has a different journey to growing up. If a 7 year old girl can wear a pair of leggings to school, so should a 17 year old girl. It doesn’t matter if the 17 year old has a more developed body, because at the end of the day, they are still both girls.

Moreover, research from institutions such as the National Center for Education Statistics highlights that dress codes do not contribute to better academic achievements or reduced disruptions. Instead, they often highlight inequalities and perpetuate gender biases, as such rules are mostly aimed at attire preferred by female students.

I propose that MHS initiate a reform of the dress code by eliminating the ban on leggings, replacing it with guidelines that respect personal choice while maintaining a focus on appropriate and respectful attire. This change would not only empower students but also demonstrate our school's commitment to fairness, inclusivity, and modern perspectives.

I urge the MHS administration and school board to consider the perspectives of the student body and align our dress code policies with the values of equity and respect.
