Remove Mandatory eBay Authenticity Program

The Issue

The eBay Authenticity Guarantee, implemented to ensure the legitimacy of high-value items, has been a well-intentioned initiative aiming to build trust among buyers and sellers. However, the mandatory nature of this program has introduced a range of issues that necessitate reconsideration. Our petition calls on eBay to make the authenticity service optional instead of obligatory, granting users more control over their transactions.

This program, while beneficial to many, imposes unnecessary constraints on user autonomy. By making it mandatory, eBay effectively limits sellers who may offer genuine products yet are inadvertently restricted from selling due to the constraints of the program or the fees associated with it. Many sellers report increased transaction times, additional shipping costs, and limitations in geographical reach due to the authentication checkpoints. Such conditions can detrimentally impact small businesses and individual sellers who operate on tighter margins than larger firms.

Moreover, for buyers who are confident in their ability to authenticate goods independently, the compulsory nature of the program can lead to increased prices and prolonged delivery times, diminishing the overall shopping experience. User autonomy to choose the level of service they desire is crucial to fostering a more adaptable and user-friendly market environment.

As the consumer this should be my choice if I want the service. Not something ebay is forcing on me. It's my money. If I want new sneakers, I may not care if they're authentic or not, I may just want new shoes. If I purchase a sports card graded by Beckett, I should not have to wait 2 weeks or longer while ebay sends it to a competing grading company for authentication. There are countless examples of items being lost, deemed not authentic despite the fact that they are. The seller nor consumer have any say in this issue and that is wrong on all levels. Items purchased in lots automatically avoid authentication as well as items purchased from outside the United States and we aren't seeing a slew of issues with these. Ebay operated for years without this. It should be optional for the consumer not something ebay decides for all.

The authenticity program's inflexible structure contrasts with the ethos of a marketplace that champions choice and competition. By adjusting the program to be optional, eBay would continue to cater to those who value this service while liberating others who seek a direct and uncomplicated transaction process.

eBay has the power to create a balanced approach that satisfies diverse consumer needs. We urge eBay to revise their policy and make the authenticity guarantee an optional service, thus enhancing flexibility, fostering trust without compulsion, and allowing the marketplace to thrive through freedom of choice. Sign this petition to advocate for change and let your voice be heard.
