Statement calling for the resignation of John Swinney and new SNP leadership

I believe it is time for John Swinney to be removed from office, as it would appear he has no intention of furthering the independence cause which the SNP were elected to pursue. Other aspects of performance have been lacking, but the main issue is clear: the core purpose of the SNP is to achieve Scottish independence.

For the party leadership to avoid or fail to debate this critical issue properly is unacceptable. It is increasingly obvious that John Swinney is not the person to take us where we need to go.

I support removing John Swinney from his position and allowing SNP members to elect a new leader—a process that should have been carried out in the first place. We need a leader who is genuinely committed to advancing the cause of independence. Any candidate seeking the leadership must clearly set out the practical method and strategy by which they intend to deliver independence, allowing party members to evaluate their proposal and decide on the best path forward.

Key arguments summarised in your statement:

Failure on Core Purpose: The SNP was founded to deliver Scottish independence, and current leadership is avoiding direct debate on how to achieve it.

Leadership Capability: John Swinney lacks the strategy and intent required to lead the independence movement effectively.

Democratic Member Mandate: SNP members should have the right to elect a new leader through an open contest rather than a coronation.

Strategic Clarity: Future leadership candidates must put forward a concrete strategy for achieving independence before members cast their votes.
