The Issue

Imagine waking up each day in what looks more like an episode of "Big Brother" than peaceful Clark County, Washington. It used to be that stepping out of the house or taking a quiet walk through the neighborhood meant enjoying the beauty and serenity of our community. But now, it feels like there’s an unsettling pair of eyes following your every move, thanks to the rampant installation of surveillance cameras everywhere.

For those of us who call Clark County home, this issue is more than just uncomfortable; it’s a fundamental invasion of our privacy. As cameras multiply at an alarming rate at parks, public buildings, and even along residential streets, the essence of what makes our community special is chipped away. We wonder: is the pursuit of security worth the cost of losing our freedom and privacy?

Data from studies show that while adding more cameras might help in reducing certain types of crime, it hasn't led to a significant drop in overall crime rates. Instead, it only contributes to increasing government surveillance, potentially infringing upon residents' rights without our consent. According to a 2022 study by the ACLU, widespread camera surveillance often leads to abuse of power, disproportionally affecting residents based on race and socio-economic status.

Moreover, there are more effective ways to ensure our safety that don’t require us to sacrifice our personal liberties. Community-based initiatives, such as neighborhood watch programs, increased street lighting, and engaging the community in safety workshops, have shown to not only enhance safety but also foster stronger, more connected communities. By focusing on these alternative solutions, Clark County can ensure its residents' safety without compromising their right to privacy.

We urge our local officials in Clark County to reconsider the extensive use of surveillance cameras. We demand transparency about how these cameras are used and a halt to further installations until proper regulations and community input guide their use. Let us come together to protect our community's essence while advocating for genuine safety measures that respect our rights.

Sign this petition and join us in telling local officials that our privacy matters, and we will stand united until our voices are heard.
