As a concerned taxpayer, I am alarmed by the increasing influence of humanities courses in premier institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). These institutions are renowned for their unparalleled excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and they represent the zenith of our nation's educational accomplishments. However, the recent inclusion and emphasis on humanities courses have begun to compromise the very essence of what these institutes stand for.

The original purpose of the IITs was to promote technical and scientific knowledge. They have produced world-class engineers, scientists, and leaders who have propelled India into a competitive global landscape. By diverting educational resources and focus towards humanities, we risk diluting the quality and global standings of IITs which are intended to be the breeding grounds for technological innovation and expertise.

There are reports and perceptions that humanities courses are leading to increased division amongst students, fostering debates centred around caste and political divisions rather than engineering solutions that can solve real-world problems. These discussions, while significant and valuable in the appropriate context, do not align with the core mission of IITs. The focus should remain steadfast on cutting-edge research and technical proficiency.

Moreover, these discussions and debates have turned once neutral campuses into grounds for political agendas, disrupting the academic environment. As taxpayers funding these prestigious institutions, we demand that our taxes contribute to advancements in technology and science, not in political or ideological indoctrination.

While acknowledging that humanities play an essential role in the broader educational ecosystem, such courses should be encouraged in institutions where these discussions align with their primary educational mission. IITs should continue focusing on their strength, which is providing world-class STEM education.

I call upon the Ministry of Education, the IIT Council, and institutional administrators to reevaluate and potentially remove the humanities courses from the IIT curriculum. This strategic step will ensure that IITs remain uncontested bastions of STEM excellence and continue their legacy of contributing to India's progressive technological future.
