this one will be interesting because Atari still owns the rights the old 3.5 digital ruleset games, include the baldur's gate series now which is co-owned by EA since Bioware has been killed off by EA...
now it is possible, since the baldur's gate 1-2 were updated in the past 5? years or so, that the rights have been passed to GoG games distribution (another place i think games would do well to reside in for further purchase or download) since their game company (which seems to be exclusive to GoG) were the ones to update and release the EE versions of both games, the graphics updates were well nice as far as being able to have the GUI properly use widescreen etc. but seemed to lack quite a bit of detail in the backgrounds themselves...
it would also be nice to see both NeverWinter Nights games receive a update to meshes and textures, and possibly animation...
those two games series are still worth playing as is, and they are two series that are the very essence of my idea of classic games that need to be revived...
revival for the two series, a question i have been wrestling with for over 10 years now is how to make them better by updating both series while keeping the story and essence completely intact because i have always wanted to do a remake of both games on a new engine...
the problem is that when games are remade on newer systems they tend to end up being changed drastically and some good but mostly bad comes from it, and personally i don't know if what i envision in my mind is possible with a complete remake of both series on a newer engine.
between that and upgrading the base games as much as possible using higher resolutions for all textures and meshes (where they apply to each series) might be all i can do, at the same time of course i would give both series as much of an update to the engines used as possible...
i do hope that i can get people who care for both of the series as much as i do, to work on them and give the games the updates they deserve.
what would need to happen to the base games, in my opinion:
- increase size of all textures to true HD
- create meshes for NeverWinter Nights 1-2 to replace the simple ones, allowing for greater modding capacity to both games (altho some mods do very decent jobs, they can only do so much)
- update pathing for both games
- update (as always) animations to be smoother, allowing modders to have unlimited access to adding/removing animations without using gimmicks in-game (rods and rings, only available on those servers)
- create a upload/download feature for all active mods from one client to another with proper p2p support instead of having to run a server from your computer or your friends to play the game together.
- expanding multiplayer to be more than what it is currently by allowing each player to not take up any slots on the other players 'companion' slots making playing with more than 5 other people on baldur's gate and what was it 4? on Neverwinter Nights 1, and i don't remember on NWN 2...
(as many as possible, i have this thing about limitations i just don't seem to be able to make myself believe in this, hence the petition lol)
these are things i think would add to the appeal of the games greatly, but they might not be possible:
- expand the available areas by connecting them directly with each other, no skipping bits of terrain, no load zones... if it is possible it will be done having a completely open travel area of the all of the areas and maps within the games from one corner of the entire game to the other without stopping using the same type of visual discovery system.
- maybe expanding the game to include new areas, maybe inwards of the sword coast...
- use a better arrangement for any item added to the game so that it can become immediately available in game, whether it's an animation or a piece of furniture or a new character that replaces one of the copy/paste extra's or a quest.
remaking the games:
(this probably won't happen, though will probably be tried out)
- use a the newest version of Unreal Engine 4+ (as usual)
- recreate the assets for the game from the ground up
- recreate and expand on range of animations and motion
- create a unique modding/sharing system that is a bit more direct that using websites, and allows modders to having complete access to all the assets in the game to create whatever add ons/mods and even standalone stories.
- build combat system from the ground up to include all forms of fighting in the game, allowing unique animations and moves for each attack specific to magic/melee/ranged/martial styles within the game.
- attack combinations (no i don't mean pushing buttons in a certain order to get a certain fight extension, no garbage gimmicks) to combine spells to create new spell effects, possibly doing the same with ranged by say use a special shot (same as in the original game) and doing a regular shot to correct aim gaining the ability to move and shoot accurately at the same time and being able to take down enemies from far and near, i am unable to think of something that would be appropriate for melee and martial.
- as always give proper (FULL) modding support.
i am not sure how much merit this has because of the inherent risks in changing and adding too much to make the game something different, so that would take some carefull planning.
personally i hope we can get the company that updated Baldur's Gate 1-2 the last time to work with those games again with a full on update of the games that includes base game updates but also updating the games (as is possible) to a new engine based off the originals with added support for mods and modding etc..
