The implementation of Flock Safety Cameras in Lake City has raised significant concerns about privacy, security, and the potential for misuse. I am personally troubled by the unsecured nature of these devices and the fact that we, the residents, do not own or control the data they collect. This has led to unwarranted government scrutiny, equivalent to warrantless searches, which I believe is a direct violation of our privacy rights. The supreme court ruling in Chatrie v. United States could also apply to flock safety and privacy.

More alarming is the evidence of these systems being misused by law enforcement. There have been incidents where these AI-enhanced cameras have contributed to unlawful arrests. I feel that the introduction of these devices has not only compromised our community’s safety but has also eroded the trust between Lake City residents and our police force.

A study by Georgetown Law reveals that nearly 1 in 4 law enforcement agencies use some form of facial recognition technology, but only 1 in 3 have a policy in place to regulate its application. This lack of oversight is concerning, and we cannot let Lake City become yet another statistic in this worrying trend.

To address these issues, it’s crucial to terminate the contract with Flock Safety and remove these invasive cameras from our neighborhoods. We must demand transparency, accountability, and control over surveillance technologies deployed in our community.
