The Issue

In Steuben County, many of us believe in the value of community trust and the importance of personal privacy. Recently, the installation of Flock cameras throughout our county has caused concern among residents who feel their presence intrudes on our day-to-day lives. While these cameras are marketed as tools to enhance public safety, they also raise significant privacy issues that are deeply troubling to those of us who have chosen to live in this peaceful part of Indiana.

Flock cameras, with their ability to capture and store vehicle license plate data, are being used in increasing numbers without transparent public discourse or consent from the community. The data these cameras collect can be retained for extended periods and shared with law enforcement agencies—often without proper oversight. This level of surveillance creates an environment of distrust and unease among people living and working in Steuben County, greatly affecting our sense of security and well-being.

Privacy is a fundamental right, and any measures that could potentially infringe upon it should be carefully weighed against their benefits. The existence of these cameras suggests that every resident is a suspect, turning our peaceful neighborhoods into high-surveillance zones. For a community built on mutual respect, collaboration, and understanding, such measures feel invasive and unnecessary.

While the intention behind Flock cameras may be to protect, studies have shown that the correlation between increased surveillance and reduced crime is tenuous at best. Moreover, there are less intrusive methods that could be explored to maintain safety, such as community policing, neighborhood watch programs, and increasing public vigilance through education and collaboration.

Let's work together to prioritize solutions that protect our residents without infringing on their privacy. By advocating for transparent discussions and decisions that reflect our community's values, we can ensure that Steuben County remains a place where everyone feels safe and respected.

Please join me in urging county officials to reconsider the use of Flock cameras. Together, we can protect our right to privacy and preserve the trust that is essential in our community. Sign this petition to request the removal of Flock cameras in Steuben County.
