Hi all, I wanted to let you know that we now have 716 signatures on this petition. Thank you so much for your support!
It is evident that the overwhelming majority of us in the area value freedom and privacy over unwarranted surveillance conducted in the name of safety. These cameras unfortunately don't make the general public feel safe; instead they are creating an environment of suspicion, division, and mistrust in our local authorities and law enforcement.
I am blown away at the number of people who are standing against government overreach. This petition gained more attention and momentum than I had imagined. I never thought I would get involved in politics but it appears I am, by default, after clicking the submit button on this petition! I am greatly concerned if mass surveillance is left unchecked that our children's and grandchildren's future will look pretty bleak. I also could not keep driving by the cameras on the west end of town without trying to do something about it!!
I will submit this petition to the Steamboat Springs Police Department and the City Council at some point but signatures are still coming in pretty fast so the more the better. I am also waiting for an endorsement from the Colorado Civil Liberties Union.
Just so everyone is aware, this is an online petition not a citizen's initiative and there is no guarantee the City will do anything with it. That being said, it is a petition non-the-less, and is the voice of the people. It is my hope that the city will take this seriously and at the very least be motivated to put this issue to a public vote.
