As a resident of Tippecanoe County, I am deeply concerned about the installation and use of Flock cameras in our community. The presence of these cameras is not only a significant invasion of privacy but also poses a safety risk to our residents, transforming our beloved county into a surveillance state.

Flock cameras are marketed as tools for crime prevention, but studies have shown that their effectiveness is questionable. In fact, according to research conducted by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, such surveillance technologies often result in increased racial profiling, false accusations, and unwarranted arrests. The potential for misuse and abuse of this data is high, and there is little oversight or transparency regarding who has access to this information.

Moreover, these cameras can capture and store detailed data about our vehicles, including license plate numbers, time, date, and location, creating a virtual log of our daily movements. This data can be accessed by law enforcement without a warrant, eroding the fundamental rights to privacy we cherish as citizens. In a free society, we should not have to live under constant watch, with our every move recorded and stored indefinitely.

Many residents, like myself, feel that our tax dollars could be better spent on community programs that address the root causes of crime—such as education, mental health services, and community engagement initiatives—rather than on technology that promotes fear and surveillance.

I urge the Tippecanoe County Council and other decision-makers to listen to the concerns of their constituents and prioritize our privacy and safety by removing Flock cameras. Instead, let's focus on building a community where safety is achieved through trust, engagement, and mutual respect, not surveillance.
