Remove flock cameras from Round Rock

Living in Round Rock, I have always loved the sense of security and community in our peaceful town. It's a place where families gather at local parks, neighbors know each other by name, and there's a shared commitment to making this a great place to live. However, I am deeply concerned about the recent installation of Flock Safety cameras by our local government.
These Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) are presented as tools to deter crime, but evidence on their effectiveness is mixed. Many reports indicate that while they might help solve some crimes, they have also led to privacy invasions and misuse of information. A report by the Electronic Frontier Foundation highlights potential issues with these systems, including over-policing and racial biases.
Furthermore, the use of ALPRs raises significant privacy concerns. The data collected by these cameras includes sensitive information on our daily movements, which can be retained and potentially abused. A study by the ACLU has shown that such data has sometimes been accessed without proper oversight or justification.
In Round Rock, where trust and community should be prioritized, citizens are now subject to constant surveillance. This doesn't just affect those with something to hide; it involves everyone. The right to move freely without being watched is something we should all be entitled to.
Moreover, there's a lack of transparency in how data collected will be used, who will have access to it, and for how long. The city council has failed to provide clear guidelines or assurances, which only adds to the discomfort many of us feel.
