Remove Flock cameras from Medford, Oregon

The Issue

In Medford, Oregon, a great injustice is taking place. The introduction of Flock cameras throughout the city is a blatant violation of our constitutional rights, bringing constant surveillance into our daily lives without our consent.

As a resident of Medford, I am deeply disturbed by this encroachment on our freedoms. The Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution protects us against unreasonable searches and seizures, yet these Flock cameras, capable of capturing images of our cars and reading license plates, are installed without any oversight or community input. This is a slippery slope towards an Orwellian society where our every move is tracked, and privacy becomes a relic of the past.

Flock cameras, which are marketed as tools to enhance public safety, present significant risks. The data collected can be hacked, misused, or sold to third parties, putting our personal information at risk. Statistics have shown that constant surveillance does not significantly reduce crime rates, yet the potential for abuse and data breaches looms large. In San Diego, for example, similar surveillance systems were found to have been used for non-law enforcement purposes, such as monitoring protests.

Moreover, these cameras disproportionately target marginalized communities, worsening existing social inequalities. They erode trust between citizens and law enforcement, as studies have shown that increased surveillance fosters a climate of fear and suspicion.

We must stand together as a community and demand the removal of these invasive Flock cameras. Our city should lead by example, respecting the rights and liberties of its citizens. Let's invest in community-based safety measures that address the root causes of crime without compromising our fundamental freedoms.

Join me in signing this petition to send a clear message to the local government: our rights are not negotiable, and we will not be silent. Together, we can ensure that Medford remains a place where freedom, privacy, and trust prevail over invasive technology.
