The Issue

Our community of Gulf Shores deserves privacy without the hidden eye of surveillance watching our every move. I attended a recent City Council meeting to make a stand against the installation of Flock safety surveillance cameras, which have silently invaded our neighborhoods. These cameras might seem like they enhance security, but independent cybersecurity research has revealed severe security liabilities and privacy failures, proving that these devices can be misused and are a danger to our personal freedoms.

Many residents may not be aware that these cameras autonomously track pedestrians, and even zoom in on children’s faces. This invasive surveillance is not the kind of security measure our community can support. We need to ask ourselves if this is the future we want: a world where our every move is potentially being observed and recorded, often without our consent or knowledge.

Although there are claims that these cameras assist in some law enforcement activities, such as locating suspects in criminal incidents, the risks far outweigh the benefits. The potential for misuse and unauthorized access is too great a threat to ignore. Gulf Shores is a place where community spirit truly thrives, and this level of surveillance does not align with our shared values.

We must demand accountability from our local officials and insist on removing these cameras before they further compromise our privacy. By eliminating Flock cameras, we take a definitive step towards safeguarding our civil liberties and maintaining the trust and integrity of our community.

Join me in this urgent call to action. Let’s show that we value our privacy and demand the removal of Flock cameras from Gulf Shores. Sign the petition today and let’s protect our privacy together.
