In recent months, we've been hearing disturbing reports coming out of Indiana where police officers have misused Flock cameras to spy on ex-partners and family members without their knowledge. As residents of Grant County, we must stand against this egregious invasion of privacy. Flock cameras, which are becoming alarmingly prevalent in our communities, represent an unconstitutional method of surveillance that our local, state, and federal governments should not engage in.

These cameras are strategically placed in public areas, surreptitiously capturing our vehicle license plates and storing data that includes the make and model of our vehicles. This unwarranted collection of personal data poses a significant threat to our privacy rights as protected under the Fourth Amendment. Our movements—ordinary citizens living their everyday lives—are being tracked, recorded, and stored without due process or our explicit consent.

The potential for abuse is clear. Invasion of privacy extends beyond police misuse. It is a slippery slope that leads to broader surveillance measures. Imagine living in a community where every driving decision is logged and analyzed without oversight. The permanence of Flock's data storage raises alarms about who controls our private information and how it’s used.

Moreover, these cameras are not bullet-proof. False hits and errors could lead to wrongful stops and unnecessary confrontations with law enforcement. Various studies have highlighted technical inaccuracies that lead to false identifications, which is especially concerning given the high stakes involved when it comes to policing.

We acknowledge the need for public safety, but Flock cameras are not the answer. We must insist on alternative solutions that uphold our constitutional rights while ensuring safety. Effective community policing strategies, better street lighting, and officer-led neighborhood initiatives have shown promising results in crime reduction without infringing upon personal freedoms.

We call upon the local Government of Grant County to take immediate action by removing these Flock cameras. Instead, let’s invest in safeguarding the personal freedoms of our residents by adopting transparent and accountable security measures that respect individual privacy.
