Remove Flock Cameras from Cherokee County, GA
The Issue
We the undersigned do hereby petition the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners and Cherokee County Sheriff's Office to immediately and permanently terminate all contracts with Flock Safety (and any other similar providers) and to immediately remove any and all ALPR's (or other related cameras from Flock Safety or similar companies) from all of unincorporated Cherokee County.
We cite the following reasons for this petition:
-Government mass surveillance is inherently immoral. Unwarranted tracking of citizens in their normal lives is a gross invasion of privacy and will ultimately lead to less safety and more tyranny.
-There is no tangible difference between having a "Government GPS Tracker" on your car and driving on the main roads in Cherokee County. This means the Sheriff's office can track your movements even when you have been accused of no crime. Regardless of whether they actually access the data or not, it is there.
-Mass surveillance technology is ripe for abuse. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office has already fired 3 deputies for abusing this technology. Not only this but it has been demonstrated that individual cameras are hackable.
-Flock Safety (and related companies) have not received any type of consent to collect the data they are collecting.
-The individual citizen has no real insight into whom their data is being shared with. Local governments can choose to share their data with other government entities, which means data collected could end up on the monitors of those far from Cherokee County. Due to the type of data collected and the ease of use of the Flock system, servers hosting the data would be a valuable target to criminals and foreign governments.
-Sophisticated criminals will simply work around the system over time and the law abiding citizens will be the ones being tracked.
-Once the system is in place, the future uses of the system are unknown. Even if the current persons in power use it responsibly, this does not mean future persons will.
If you can not go to the grocery store without the government knowing it, are you really a free citizen? Free people take responsibility for themselves and know that "safety" is not the highest good, freedom is.
