Remove Flock Cameras and ALPR from Joliet
The Issue
As a long-time resident of Joliet, I've seen this city grow and change, facing both opportunities and challenges. Recently, however, a new concern has emerged with the installation of Flock Cameras and Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPR) across various parts of our community. While their implementation is often justified under the guise of enhancing public safety, many residents, including myself, believe these devices pose significant threats to our privacy and civil liberties.
Flock Cameras and ALPR systems continuously capture images of vehicles and their license plates, storing this data often for long periods. This technology allows for the mass collection of data without probable cause, effectively creating a surveillance network that can track our movements without our consent. The implications are staggering, as it can lead to potential abuse and misuse by authorities, invasion of privacy, and the erosion of trust within our community.
Studies have shown that these devices are not always effective in reducing crime rates. A report from the Electronic Frontier Foundation highlights that these technologies often fail to significantly improve crime clearance rates. Instead, they become tools for racial profiling and discrimination, increasing tensions in communities already facing challenges. Are we willing to trade our freedoms for such questionable benefits?
Moreover, there has been minimal transparency regarding the handling, storage, and use of the data collected by these systems. Questions remain unanswered about who has access to this data, how long it is stored, and what measures are in place to protect it from breaches.
As citizens, it is our right and responsibility to voice opposition to measures that compromise our privacy without delivering proven security benefits. We deserve better solutions—those that truly address our community's safety needs without infringing on individual rights.
I urge fellow Joliet residents and all those who care about personal privacy and civil liberties to stand together in calling for the removal of Flock Cameras and ALPR systems from our city. Let's explore alternative measures that truly prioritize both safety and privacy.
Please sign this petition to show your support for a Joliet where privacy is respected and security is achieved through transparent and accountable means.
