Remove Federal Student Loans From Credit Reports

Remove Federal Student Loans From Credit Reports
The Issue
Student loan debt is holding millions of Americans back, not just because of the payments, but because it damages their credit and limits their ability to build a stable future.
Federal student loans are issued or backed by the United States Department of Education and are fundamentally different from credit cards, car loans, or other consumer debt. Yet they are reported to credit bureaus and can severely impact a borrower’s credit score, even when payments are being made.
This has real consequences.
People are being denied housing, higher interest rates, job opportunities, and financial mobility simply because student loans appear on their credit reports.
We believe federal student loans should not be included in consumer credit reporting.
We call on the United States Congress to pass legislation requiring that federally issued student loans, including subsidized and unsubsidized loans, be removed from consumer credit reports, regardless of whether the loan is current or in default.
Removing these loans from credit reports would not eliminate the debt. Borrowers would still be responsible for repayment. However, it would remove a major barrier preventing millions of Americans from accessing housing, transportation, and financial opportunity.
Student loan debt should not permanently damage someone’s ability to participate in the economy.
