Eugenia Cooney is a very well known person on social media. Her content is viewed by thousands of people world wide. It is also widely known that she is extremely underweight and very unwell. Though this does not mean that she is a bad person, her content (specifically Instagram posts) are very harmful and unethical. Instagram recently ‘knuckled down’ on their community guidelines around self-injury and pro-eating disorder content but they continue to allow her content because she is verified. Her photos are harmful to her viewers as well as to herself. By allowing this content to be posted and even advertising it (due to her being verified) Instagram are promoting underweight bodies and eating disorders. Many people will see this content and feel pressured to look like that and this is unhealthy and very dangerous. They are also allowing others to ‘encourage’ Eugenia to be unwell. It is not helpful for anyone.
