The Issue

On a day that was supposed to be about camaraderie, talent, and sportsmanship, my heart sank when Sophie Cunningham, a talented basketball player and role model for many young athletes, was assaulted by Dijon. This incident shook me to the core not only because of the physical assault but also the subsequent torrent of racist comments Dijon unleashed on social media. These actions are deeply inappropriate, painful, and damaging to the very essence of sportsmanship and inclusivity that the WNBA stands for.

The WNBA has long been a beacon of empowerment, diversity, and unity, showcasing amazing athletes who embody respect for one another while inspiring the next generation. Allowing someone who promotes violence and perpetuates racism to remain in this league only reinforces the wrong message. It tells our children that such behavior is excusable. It tells them that despite progress, those core values of mutual respect and equality are negotiable.

In 2021, a survey revealed that over 50% of young girls in sports look up to professional athletes as role models. What does it say to them when someone in a respected position can freely desecrate these ideals and remain their role model? By allowing Dijon to remain in the WNBA, we run the risk of normalizing a culture of intolerance, directly contradicting the inclusive ethos sports teams strive to uphold.

We believe the WNBA has the responsibility to set high standards of conduct for all its players. Dijon’s appalling actions warrant a profound response to illustrate zero tolerance for racism and violence. Removing her from the league would not only hold Dijon accountable for her behavior but also send a powerful message that the WNBA champions and upholds justice, dignity, and respect.

We ask the WNBA to do the right thing by taking immediate disciplinary action against Dijon. The integrity of the sport and the message we send to young fans are on the line. Let's stand together in defense of an ethical, inclusive environment for all athletes.

Join us in demanding Dijon’s removal to preserve the credibility and honor of women’s professional basketball. Sign this petition to make our voices heard and reaffirm our collective commitment to equality and respect in sports.
