Remove Debbie McKnight from Her Position as Animal Care and Control Shelter Director
The Issue
The story of this petition begins with a concern that has come to upset many of us - healthy dogs being euthanized at an alarming rate. This issue has been affecting our community for considerable time under the leadership of current director of our animal care and control shelter, Debbie McKnight.
Our local shelters should serve as a safe haven for animals, especially ones that have found themselves homeless by circumstance. However, under Ms. McKnight's administration, the number of healthy dogs euthanized has seen an unacceptable increase. This heartbreaking situation contrasts with the role of animal shelters in providing care and seeking new homes for these animals. It's the reason why I now ask for her removal from the position.
Although it is sometimes necessary to euthanize animals due to severe health or behavior issues, what we are witnessing exceeds reasonable and compassionate management. The American Veterinary Medical Association stipulates that euthanasia should be a last-resort decision, primarily for animals who are suffering or pose safety risks - it should never be used as an overpopulation control method (AVMA guidelines, 2020).
From this perspective, removing Debbie McKnight from her position as director of our animal care and control shelter is a step towards better management, one that guarantees respect for animal life and prioritizes adoption efforts.
