Remove Dangerous Cattle Grids in Castle Meadows

Remove Dangerous Cattle Grids in Castle Meadows
The Issue
Monmouthshire County Council has proposed improvements to the existing walking and cycling routes across Castle Meadows in Abergavenny. This riverside area is used by dog walkers, pedestrians and cyclists and is also grazed by cattle for part of the year. The proposals for new gateways are designed to promote access to the meadows for cyclists and mobility scooter users, and to prevent cattle from wandering. Despite warnings about the danger to dogs and small children of using cattle grids, they have been installed this week (w/c April 24th), and a few days later a dog was killed by breaking its neck running across the grid. Others have been injured. Whilst we understand the importance of sharing space, these grids are clearly not an appropriate solution. Next time it could be a small child.
Planning Application DM/2022/01831 will be discussed at the Planning Committee of MCC on Tuesday May 2nd 2023 at 2pm and we hope this petition will make the views of the signatories very clear to committee members, and that they will take the necessary action. [An MCC ePetition requires approval from MCC and so could not be completed within the timeframe over the Bank Holiday weekend, hence this online petition instead]
