Remove cuts to music funding in Grand Forks Public Schools

The Issue

Music education is an essential component of holistic development in students, and many studies have shown its significant benefits in cognitive and emotional growth. Yet, despite these well-documented advantages, the recent decision by the Grand Forks school board to cut funding for music programs threatens to undermine these benefits for our children.

Music not only nurtures creativity, self-expression, and aesthetic appreciation but also enhances critical skills such as teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. According to research published by the National Endowment for the Arts, students who study the arts, including music, are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement and three times more likely to have excellent school attendance. Moreover, the American Music Therapy Association highlights that music activities engage both hemispheres of the brain, which enhances learning, memory, and mental processing.

The Grand Forks community must prioritize maintaining music education within our schools. With a strong music program, students can experience personal growth and development, and our community as a whole can benefit from enriched cultural vibrancy and unity. Cutting music programs not only diminishes students' educational experiences but also erodes a decades-long tradition of excellence and pride in our schools.

The current proposal to cut 6.5 music positions unfairly singles out a thriving program with a history of strong community support. These cuts were proposed at an administrative level without teacher input. We urge the Grand Forks school board to reconsider these detrimental cuts and explore other means of securing the necessary funds for our music programs. Our children deserve access to a well-rounded education that includes music. Please show your support for this cause and advocate for the continuation of music education by signing this petition.
