Remove CSULB Faculty Member for Racially Motivated Harassment and Assault

The Issue

Summary
Residents and community members call on California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) and Greystar Real Estate Partners to launch a full investigation into a racially charged, violent confrontation at Channel Point Apartments in Long Beach, where a CSULB faculty member Brent Scheiwe resides and the property is managed by his spouse Kathy Scheiwe.

Background
On September 11, 2025, a disabled African-American tenant at Channel Point Apartments experienced racial harassment and physical aggression during a confrontation with a CSULB faculty resident.

According to the tenant’s statement and a supporting witness declaration, the faculty member used a racial slur—calling the tenant “boy”—and behaved in an alarming, intimidating way that caused the victim to fear for his safety.

Further details, photos, and public records are documented at:

The incident occurred at a Greystar-managed property, where the faculty member’s spouse serves in a management role. The victim has reported the event to authorities and provided documentation to support the account.

Conflict of Interest
Because the property manager and the faculty member are married, and the complex houses CSULB students and community members, the situation creates an unacceptable conflict of interest that threatens tenant safety and undermines confidence in both CSULB and Greystar.

Our Demands

We urge:

  • CSULB President Jane Close Conoley
  • CSU Chancellor Mildred García
  • Greystar Real Estate Partners

to take the following actions:

  1. Investigate the September 11, 2025 incident and related complaints of racial or disability-based harassment.
  2. Suspend the involved faculty member from CSULB duties pending investigation.
  3. Review the management arrangement for conflicts of interest between CSULB staff and Greystar properties.
  4. Implement mandatory anti-bias and disability-awareness training for faculty and property staff.
  5. Protect tenants and students who report discrimination or retaliation.

Why This Matters
Racial harassment and violence have no place in our homes, schools, or communities.
Universities and housing providers share a duty to ensure every person—especially those from marginalized or disabled backgrounds—can live without fear.

Allowing this conduct to go unaddressed erodes CSULB’s stated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and places residents at continued risk.
