Remove Connie Smothermon as Adjunct Professor at OU Law and OCU Law

The Issue

On February 25, 2025, the Supreme Court issued its decision in Glossip v. United States, ordering a new trial for Richard Glossip. In so ruling, the Court determined that the lead prosecutor on the case, Connie Smothermon, deliberately elicited false testimony, violating Napue v. Illinois. The opinion spares no details about Connie Smothermon's conduct. At trial, Ms. Smothermon knowingly elicited false testimony from her star witness, Justin Sneed. She also violated the rule of sequestration, destroyed evidence, and withheld witness statements.

Much of the misconduct discussed by the Supreme Court has been known to the public for some time, at least since the release of the first Reed Smith Report in June 2022. Despite this knowledge, the University of Oklahoma College of Law and the Oklahoma City University School of Law have continued to allow Ms. Smothermon to teach courses such as criminal procedure adjudication and client counseling, interviewing, and negotiations. This should be intolerable at any law school, let alone schools that pride themselves on serving local communities.

We, the signatories to this petition request that, at the end of the Spring 2025 semester, the OU and OCU law schools no longer employ or associate themselves with Connie Smothermon. Ms. Smothermon should not be teaching at OU Law or OCU Law, nor should she be permitted to play any role in OU Law's Competitions Program.
