Remove CBE exam scores from high school GPA calculations in Argyle ISD

The Issue

We are bringing attention to a policy change that will significantly impact students in the Argyle Independent School District. Beginning this May, the district plans to include Credit by Examination (CBE) scores in high school GPA calculations. While this may appear to be an administrative adjustment, its consequences for student motivation, academic culture, and opportunity are substantial.

For many students, CBE is the only practical pathway to accelerate their education and access advanced coursework beyond the limited correspondence options currently available. It exists to help students demonstrate readiness and progress academically at a pace aligned with their abilities. Turning a placement exam into a GPA penalty discourages ambition and unfairly penalizes students who are willing to challenge themselves. Instead of encouraging excellence, the policy risks creating hesitation and fear around academic advancement.

Education should promote growth, exploration, and initiative. When a single exam carries permanent GPA consequences, students are pressured to protect transcripts rather than pursue opportunity. This creates anxiety where there should be confidence and undermines the purpose of CBE as a tool for academic progress. A strong educational environment rewards curiosity and resilience, not avoidance of risk.

This change may also alter the culture of achievement within the district. Students who once viewed acceleration as a pathway to growth may begin to avoid it entirely. Over time, this discouragement could reduce participation in advanced learning and limit the potential of highly motivated students. Policies that unintentionally suppress initiative do not serve students or the district’s long-term academic goals.

Tying GPA to CBE risks shrinking one of the district’s few avenues for acceleration and excellence. A policy intended to uphold standards should not become a barrier to progress. Students who seek advanced learning opportunities should be supported and encouraged, not placed in a position where advancement feels like a gamble.

We respectfully urge Argyle ISD administrators and board members to reconsider this decision. Preserving CBE as a non-punitive pathway will maintain a learning environment that values ambition, supports growth, and empowers students to reach their full potential. Education should expand opportunity, not restrict it.

Please sign this petition to support students’ ability to challenge themselves and pursue excellence without fear of lasting academic penalty.
