Remove Breakdancing from the Olympics to Address Systemic Racism & Cultural Appropriation

The Issue

Breakdancing, a dance form originated in the 1970s in the marginalized African-American and Hispanic-American communities of Bronx, New York, has been officially included in the Olympics, specifically in Paris 2024. This decision has spread concerns among various circles that believe this development is an alarming sign of systemic racism and cultural appropriation (source: The Guardian). Breakdancing is deeply rooted in the history of these cultures and its commercialization and sanitation for global audiences do not provide due respect and context to its origins (source: The New York Times). This act of integrating breakdancing in a global platform like the Olympics, without due acknowledgment and measures addressing its roots, is seen as an attempt to misrepresent and appropriate cultures. We urge the International Olympic Committee to reconsider the decision, recognizing and respecting the deep cultural significance of breakdancing, and formulating strategies to address these sensitive cultural dynamics. Please sign this petition to help in preserving the authenticity of Hip Hop culture and prevent further harm to the culture in which the art form was originated.
