Remove branded ‘Beal hijaab’ from the Beal Sixth Form dress code

The Issue

ATTENTION ALL BEAL STUDENTS.

The exploitation of religious symbols, particularly the hijab, for individual profit by businesses has become increasingly unsettling, it's a common trend we are used to however we did not expect it to stem from our educational enviroment. It is deeply concerning that major decisions impacting Muslim women are being made without the input of a single Muslim woman, as i understand from the current team deciding these rules. The hijab is a sacred symbol, both physically and spiritually. Its commodification for profit is neither fair nor respectful, so we find it unsettling that a religious item so dear to us is being used as a 'profit tool'. Here at beal we were always taught that they were different for inclusivity, a word that must now seem foreign given the current situation.

The increasing trend of capitalising on cultural and religious elements is not unique to our locality. According to reports, it has grown by 83% worldwide in just the last decade. The branding of a religious head covering has been found very disrespectful to the muslim community as well as followers of other religions, and we are shocked at the double standards as to why this logo is only being enforced upon the hijab but not the turban, which are both religious head coverings.

The indirect enforcement of branded religious items upon us limits our freedom to express ourselves through our clothing. This is at odds with the fundamental Beal High School's values of freedom of expression and respect for religious difference. The hijaab is a a religious garment that women wear for islam, not beal high school, and it is shocking that this statement must even be said. Moreover we are taught to accept the small chance of 'inclusivity' we receive, and are expected to be grateful for the distasteful actions given.

By signing this petition, you can support us in our fight against the undue commodification and exploitation of our cultural, religious symbols. We not only want a change, we need it.
