Remove Blue Lives Matter Flag and Address Inappropriate Comments
The Issue
As a concerned parent and community member, I am deeply disturbed by the presence of the Blue Lives Matter flag displayed in calculus teacher Timothy Werdel’s classroom at Segerstrom Hogh School in Santa Ana Unified School District. This flag, while representing support for law enforcement, is a divisive symbol given its history and context.
The Blue Lives Matter flag emerged as a counter-movement to Black Lives Matter, a human rights movement focused on addressing systemic racism and violence against Black individuals. Displaying this flag in a diverse educational environment can be perceived as an endorsement of an ideology that undermines the school district's commitment to inclusivity and equality.
Moreover, Mr. Werdel has made dog whistle comments criticizing the provision of free school lunches and free AP tests. These programs are crucial for supporting underprivileged students, ensuring they have equal access to education and the basic necessities that support their learning and growth. Suggesting otherwise reflects a lack of understanding of the challenges many students face within our community.
The classroom should be a space where students feel safe and valued, irrespective of their backgrounds. It is imperative that the Santa Ana Unified School District takes immediate action to address these issues. This includes removing the Blue Lives Matter flag from the classroom and conducting a thorough review of any inappropriate comments made by Mr. Werdel to ensure they align with the district's values.
Every student deserves to learn in an environment free from bias and discrimination. By taking these steps, the district will demonstrate its commitment to fostering a culture of respect, inclusion, and understanding.
I urge the Santa Ana Unified School District to act swiftly and decisively. Let us work together to create a nurturing and accepting space for all students. Please sign this petition to support this call for action. Together, we can hold our educational institutions to the high standards they should uphold for every student's well-being and success.
