As a woman living in the Barrhead, Alberta area, it deeply concerns me and infringes on my personal peace to constantly be confronted with intrusive abortion signs in our community. These signs can be distressing, serving as unrequested reminders and uninformed opinions on a personal and often complex decision. Every woman has the right to autonomy over her body, a principle that our Canadian law supports through affirming the bodily integrity of every individual.

In Canada, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms secures every person's autonomy and personal legal rights. It guarantees every Canadian the right to security, which includes the right to make decisions concerning one's body. This principle is upheld in the Supreme Court ruling in R. v. Morgentaler (1988), a landmark case that affirmed the importance of respecting women's right to control their own health, free of undue burdens by the state or the public.

The distress caused by these abortion signs infringes on these secured rights. It is not a question of silencing free speech, but rather a matter of preserving the dignity and personal security of women in Barrhead and area. We are not advocating against the right to personal opinion, rather, we aim to foster a respectful community environment where people feel safe from unwarranted imposition or imposition of personal belief.

We call on local authorities in Barrhead, AB, to address this issue and remove these offensive abortion signs from public view. They serve no purpose but to distress and potentially traumatize women who are equal citizens in our community. Therefore, we ask that necessary steps are taken to ensure that Barrhead is a city where every citizen can live without fear of unnecessary emotional distress.
