The UN Security Council’s veto system should be removed because it allows a small number of powerful states to override the global majority, blocking urgent humanitarian action. This was clearly visible in the 2024 Gaza ceasefire votes, where the United States repeatedly vetoed resolutions despite overwhelming international support calling for a ceasefire. In February 2024, a ceasefire proposal backed by most council members failed solely due to a US veto, even as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsened. Meanwhile, later votes showed 14 of 15 members supporting ceasefire language, yet action was still delayed or weakened because of great-power politics. This undermines the UN’s credibility and makes it seem incapable of preventing mass civilian suffering. Removing veto power would make decisions more democratic, fair, and responsive to global humanitarian needs.

The fact of the matter is, no country should be allowed to just say ‘no’ and decide on everyone else’s behalf. The United Nations was created to bring peace and allow agreements to be made, not to give countries more power than they already have.
