The Issue

Flock Safety cameras create a sweeping, unregulated mass surveillance network that threatens everyday privacy by tracking and logging the movements of law-abiding citizens without a warrant. For the residents of Central Texas—particularly across Williamson County—this means living under constant watch, raising deep concerns about privacy and individual freedom. Because our local communities blend together seamlessly, this expansive network tracks our neighbors as they commute, shop, and travel across county lines every single day.
Civil liberties groups caution against this expansive database, warning that it's highly susceptible to systemic misuse. There are documented cases where police used such surveillance systems to track protesters and even stalk individuals, posing a dire threat to the democratic values that uphold our society. The implications of this are far-reaching and dangerous, particularly when citizens can be monitored without having committed any crime.
Moreover, Flock's system relies on algorithms that have shown a propensity for racial bias, resulting in flawed profiling. The frequent false positives generated by these algorithms can perpetrate unfair treatment against marginalized communities, exacerbating existing tensions and fostering mistrust between law enforcement and the public.
Beyond privacy concerns, there are questions about accountability and transparency. Without proper oversight, who ensures that personal data isn't being accessed or used improperly? The installation of Flock cameras in public spaces effectively deputizes private companies to conduct surveillance without the rigorous regulations and public accountability expected of governmental institutions.
We must demand that our Central Texas officials and lawmakers prioritize our civil rights and protect our community from unnecessary surveillance. This begins by removing all Flock cameras across Williamson and Travis counties to ensure that our neighborhoods are safe from unwarranted monitoring.
Join us in taking a stand against this invasive technology. Sign the petition to remove Flock cameras from Central Texas and protect our right to privacy.
