The Issue

In Denmark, Wisconsin, the everyday freedom we once took for granted is under threat from the invasive eyes of Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras. These surveillance devices, installed in our community, are capturing and recording every vehicle that passes by, leaving no room for privacy on our roads.

This issue is deeply personal to us residents of Denmark. Our once private journeys are now monitored, our comings and goings are cataloged, and our peace of mind is compromised. The Flock Safety cameras, known for their ability to read license plates from hundreds of feet away, are everywhere, turning our small-town roads into monitored zones reminiscent of a far more surveilled society.

ALPR technology, while intended to promote public safety and solve crimes, ironically threatens the very freedoms it aims to protect. While crime reduction is vital, the blanket surveillance across Denmark infringes upon our basic rights, intruding into our personal lives without justification or consent. The methods employed by these systems are indiscriminate; they record everyone, every day, and all the time, regardless of whether we are doing something wrong or simple everyday tasks.

The effectiveness of ALPR data for valuable law enforcement purposes is also questionable. Studies have shown that such surveillance often delivers minuscule benefits, with the costs far outweighing them. Furthermore, misuse of collected data is a significant concern. There have been instances where data was kept indefinitely, shared inappropriately, or accessed by unauthorized personnel, amplifying the potential for abuse.

It's imperative to rethink and realign the approach to public safety in Denmark. Meaningful engagement with the community and transparent dialogue can lead to effective alternatives that respect individual privacy while ensuring safety. This includes investing in community policing methods, enhancing neighborhood watch programs, and utilizing technology in a way that does not compromise personal freedoms.

Thus, we urge the local government and law enforcement agencies to remove these ALPR cameras and halt further deployment across Denmark, Wisconsin. Privacy is a fundamental right, and residents should have the freedom to travel our streets without being constantly watched.

Please join us in our fight to preserve our town’s integrity and to reclaim our roads for privacy and peace. Sign this petition to demand the removal of ALPR cameras from Denmark, Wisconsin, and let our voices be heard against this overreach of surveillance.
