Imagine a sunny day at Melbourne Beach, where families and friends gather to enjoy the sea and sand. It's a place where you should feel free and at ease. Yet, this freedom is under threat. Recently, AI cameras from Shoreline Century and Seahawk's emergency system were installed at our beach accesses on drown zero buoy stands, ostensibly for safety. However, every time my child and I visit the beach, we are recorded, infrigning upon our right to privacy.

Recording people, especially families with children in bathing suits, is a clear violation of our Fourth Amendment rights. No company should have the right to invade our personal space and capture our private moments under the guise of public safety. The presence of these cameras makes our beach visits uncomfortable and intrusive, stripping away the sense of community and freedom that beaches are supposed to symbolize.

If public safety truly is the concern, then we need to look at other, less invasive measures. Hiring local lifeguards would not only enhance safety but also create jobs within our community. Employing locals to monitor the beaches can ensure the well-being of beachgoers, while respecting their privacy and enhancing the local economy. It's a practical solution that aligns with the values of our community and respects our rights.

Moreover, studies indicate that placing trust in local labor instead of relying on impersonal technology fosters a more vigilant and responsible environment. The human touch in emergency situations is indispensable and cannot be replaced by machines. Investing in life guards from our community not only builds trust but also strengthens local ties.
