The Issue

As a long-time resident and Canadian citizen of Mississauga, I am deeply concerned about the presence of unnecessary speeding cameras that are contributing to stress, anxiety, and financial strain on our community. These cameras, while placed strategically near schools due to safety risks to pedestrians, fine drivers driving during times that often do not pose a risk to safety such as late night or during summer break, are leading to fines upwards of $200, significantly impacting individuals already struggling with the high cost of living. This situation creates a difficult choice: adhere strictly to the speed limits and risk unsafe driving situations from other drivers, or face penalties that many simply cannot afford.

Having lived in Mississauga for 20 years, I understand the necessity of maintaining public safety on our roads. Yet, our community would greatly benefit from a more balanced approach—one that emphasizes the importance of proper judgment and discretion from law enforcement officials. I can personally attest to the dangers that truly need attention, having repeatedly called 911 to report impaired drivers on our highways. This underscores the need for our resources to focus on genuine safety concerns rather than automatic ticketing that doesn’t necessarily improve safety.

Numerous studies suggest that speed camera enforcement is most effective in reducing accidents when used in high-risk areas during peak traffic hours. In contrast, low-risk areas with minimal traffic see little benefit in terms of accident prevention but generate significant revenue at the expense of residents. It's crucial that Mississauga's traffic enforcement policies are reviewed and aligned with these findings, directing resources where they are genuinely needed for the safety of all road users.

We urge local authorities in Mississauga to reconsider the placement of speeding cameras and employ a more strategic approach that prioritizes public safety over revenue generation. This includes reassessing high fine zones, especially those in areas with low accident rates during off-peak times, and empowering police officers to use their judgment when issuing tickets, focusing on serious offenses such as reckless or impaired driving.

By signing this petition, you will help advocate for a fairer, smarter traffic enforcement system that truly enhances road safety while reducing unnecessary financial burdens on our residents. Let’s work together to bring about reasonable and effective changes to our traffic policies in Mississauga. Please sign and support this cause for a safer, more equitable community.
