The Issue

Catherine Eddowes was born in Wolverhampton in 1842, making her a Wulfrunian and a woman of the Black Country. In 1888 she became the fourth victim of the Jack the Ripper murders.

Too often, the story of Jack the Ripper focuses on the killer rather than the women whose lives were taken. In doing so, the victims are denied their own voice and identity, remembered only through the man who murdered them. Catherine Eddowes was more than a victim — she was a woman from our city with her own life, story and connection to Wolverhampton.

Despite this connection, there is currently no memorial to her here apart from a blue plaque near where she was born. A small statue on Victoria Street could respectfully honour her life and recognise her as a woman from our community.

The memorial could also stand as a tribute to victims of violence against women throughout history — ensuring their stories are remembered, and their voices are not lost.

I am calling on Wolverhampton City Council to consider installing a memorial statue to Catherine Eddowes on Victoria Street so her connection to Wolverhampton is properly recognised and remembered.

💜 Sign now and share to make sure Catherine—and all women whose lives were tragically cut short—are remembered with dignity, not just as victims. Every signature helps bring this memorial to life.
