Remake and Localize the Legendary Gal Game: Amagami to the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, PC
The Issue
Hello,
I share a passion and love interest in anime and video games. I watched Amagami for the first time in 2017 with my brother and we absolutely loved it. I loved the story arcs, the art, and the animation of the amazing series.
Amagami is about a teenage boy named Junichi Tachibana who is stood up on a date on Christmas Eve. Ever since this, he loses total confidence in himself with love and girls in fear of being rejected again. Lucky for him he still has a chance to at love when he encounters several girls who he is interested in: Haruka Morishima, the energetic and popular upperclassman with a love for cute things; Kaoru Tanamachi, his childhood friend who harbors secret feelings for him; Sae Nakata, the timid transfer student who is shy around men; Ai Nanasaki, a girl on the swim team who has a bad first impression of Junichi; Rihoko Sakurai, a childhood friend with a love for sweets; and Tsukasa Ayatsuji, a seemingly perfect class representative who has a hidden dark side. As Christmas Eve approaches, Junichi can only hope that this will be the year he will finally spend the holidays with the one he truly loves.
When I found out that Amagami was based on a game after I had watched it, I went wild to see if it was playable with my Switch or PlayStation. Unfortunately, Amagami was created for the PS2 and had no remakes nor official English translations since it was a Japan-only game. Amagami was released in Japan for the first time in 2009. Following 2011 and 2014 with improved graphics and performance on the PSP and PSVita. The game Amagami was a massive hit game in Japan when it came out which later inspired the anime. Realizing this I was a bit bumed out since I don't know how to speak and read in Japanese nor I had a Japanese console to support the game. I did some more research and found about the Fan-Made English patches through hacking, but I don't believe in it. There’re many flaws such as bugs that slow down console performance, visual glitches, choppiness, etc. and a person like me wouldn’t want to risk damaging a console over a single game. Not only that but the translations are not all done, leaving the game incomplete.
I think it's very absurd that it had to be taken to this level. It has been over a decade since that game came out but the company who made the game, Enterbrain (owned by KadoKawa today) have made zero announcements for a remake of the game making the entire possibility of the game coming out for their own Japanese audience a low possibility. So having an English version sounds like an impossibility which sucks.
Enterbrain (aka. Kadokawa) haven't been doing a lot for the gaming industry in recent years and slowed down dramatically. Having their latest couple of games for the PS4 and other games for the 3ds, PSP, and PSVita, which are very old now. It feels like the reason that there have been no updates for anything for the game in so long that the company just made the game and called it a day. Amagami seems to be history for them given the fact it's super old, released in 2009, and with very mute announcements and updates. They probably think the game had its run. I do understand that it also takes a lot of money, time, and patience to remake a game. Then officially patching it in English would make the game a whole different monster to work on. The process to get all the voices and staff together will also take time and money. But a remake of this game for the Western Community would be a hit.
In the recent years, the Western community have been opening up to Dating Sims and VNs (Virtual Novels) like mad over the years and they are hungry to get a chance to play this amazing hit classic game.
A remake would allow the game on a brand-new modern software and servers. The Nintendo Switch and PS5 are the best with this. Remaking the game to modern day consoles can revive the game for older and younger players without making them buy a PS2 (JPN) in 2025. It's really hard to get a hold of it for a good price and if it works the way it should. They should also consider localizing it to PC gamers since computer gaming is super popular for the new generation. With that in mind we should also consider adding new content.
Adding extra content for example heroines like Hibiki and Keiko would expand the game and story arcs adding a whole new experience that was never seen before. Also, the game only features events in the first season on the anime adaption. Amagami SS Plus, the second season of the series, was just an add-on to the story that was never accessible and playable in the game. Adding the events from Amagami SS Plus would extend the arcs of each heroine making the game longer so we can have longer playing hours for a single run.
But at the end of the day, Kadokawa may have better things to do. They create tons of anime projects that have value because of the demand. The only way they will think about doing this, is that they need the confidence that people will buy the game. The higher the demand, the more likely that they will be willing to invest in recreating Amagami.
I want to thank everyone who has supported me so far. It brings me joy and happiness. You guys mean everything to me right now. If we support each other, we can definitely get this done. If there is any way you would like to help, be sure to do so. Thank you, readers, for taking the time to read this article. WE CAN DO THIS! :)
