Relocate the Resting Place of Mary 1st to Peterborough Cathedral

The Issue

Speaking as someone deeply invested in the study of the late Tudors, I find the final resting place of our former monarch Mary 1st, also known as Bloody Mary, deeply unsettling. Mary left explicit instructions in her will for her body to be laid to rest next to her beloved mother in Peterborough Cathedral. Shockingly, her last wish was disregarded, and she was interred in Westminster Abbey instead.

This offense would have been stark even in isolation. However, it's made even more troubling by the fact that Mary was entombed beneath Elizabeth 1st, her sister -whom she hated and viewed as illegitimate, and who reversed all of Mary's policies during her reign. This directly contradicts the known wishes of Mary and is a pointed disrespect to her memory.

Let's correct this centuries-old wrong. By moving Mary's body to her chosen resting place in Peterborough Cathedral, we can honor not only significant figure in Tudor history, but the first female ruler of England and restore some respect to a woman whose life was marked by turbulent politics and personal hardship.

Historical accuracy and respect for the dead are the pillars of our shared heritage. Join us in calling on the authorities at Westminster Abbey and Peterborough Cathedral, along with the Church of England, to relocate the remains of Mary 1st in accordance to her documented wishes.
