The proposed site lies within a natural floodplain that helps protect South Chennai during heavy rainfall. If this flood-buffering landscape is altered, the consequences will not be confined to the project site. Floodwaters do not stop at property boundaries—they spread across neighbourhoods, affecting thousands of families living downstream.

The greatest burden will fall on residents of Chennai's already vulnerable low-lying areas. Every major flood brings enormous economic losses—damaged homes, destroyed vehicles, interrupted businesses, lost wages, and costly repairs. Families endure days or weeks without access to schools, workplaces, healthcare and essential services. The financial losses are often accompanied by mental stress, uncertainty and long-term emotional trauma.

For many middle- and low-income families, each flood means rebuilding their lives from scratch. Those with greater financial means may relocate or recover more quickly, but economically vulnerable communities are often left with no option but to continue living in flood-prone neighbourhoods, facing the same risks year after year.Chennai has already witnessed this reality during the floods of 2005, 2015 and 2023. As climate change increases the intensity of extreme rainfall, we cannot afford to make decisions that further reduce the city's natural flood resilience.

A world-class sports city should become a symbol of Tamil Nadu's progress—not a source of avoidable flood risk. Choosing a safer location today will protect lives, livelihoods, public finances and Chennai's future.
