The Issue
Punch the monkey, who lives at Ichikawa City Zoo, has captured the attention of people around the world. Photos and videos of him clinging to a stuffed toy have gone viral, but behind these images is a deeper concern about the conditions he and the other monkeys are living in.
At Ichikawa City Zoo, Punch and the other macaques are kept in an enclosure that many viewers believe is too small, barren, and lacking the enrichment that intelligent, social primates need. Monkeys like Punch are highly intelligent animals that require space to climb, explore, socialize, and engage in natural behaviors. When these needs are not met, primates can experience stress, boredom, and psychological harm.
Japan’s animal welfare protections for captive wildlife have long been criticized by international advocates for being less strict than those in many other developed countries. While some zoos provide excellent care, others continue to house animals in environments that do not reflect modern standards of animal welfare.
Punch’s situation has become a symbol of a larger conversation about how captive primates should be treated. Around the world, many former zoo animals have been successfully relocated to wildlife sanctuaries where they can live in larger, more natural environments with proper enrichment and care.
We are asking the administration of Ichikawa City Zoo, operated by the Ichikawa City Government, to consider relocating Punch to a reputable primate sanctuary where his physical and psychological needs can be better met.
Punch deserves more than viral attention. He deserves a life that allows him to behave like the intelligent, social animal he is.
Please sign this petition to urge Ichikawa City Zoo to work with accredited sanctuaries and animal welfare organizations to relocate Punch and improve the welfare of the primates currently living at the zoo.
