The Issue

I am writing this petition to seek justice and compassion for my father, Zu Jian Zhang, the owner of Gold Bowl Restaurant in Vidalia, Louisiana. Zu, alongside his wife, my mother, started the restaurant a couple years ago, creating a place where the community gathers not only for delicious meals but also to witness the embodiment of hard work and humility. Customers from Ferriday, Vidalia, and even Natchez come to experience the cuisine he has to offer for their towns.

For our family, especially for my mother and my younger brother, his detention by ICE has been a very devastating blow. My mother, battling depression, has fallen deeper into despair without her husband by her side. I myself am struggling to focus in college, carrying the weight of uncertainty and fear every day. My younger brother, Bertram, who has always leaned on my father for support, is also suffering. Financially and emotionally, we are struggling under the pressure of his absence. My father's absence has created a void that is very difficult to fill, affecting both our family and the community that knows him. My father has always been admired for the kindness and generosity he extends to everyone he meets. His supporters for his business are countless, and it is evident that his contributions to our small town have touched many hearts.

Zu Jian Zhang's story isn't just our family's story, it's Vidalia's story. His presence is quiet but he is still well known in the community, and without him, we are not whole. While immigration laws are important, they should not break families or rob communities of vital members who contribute positively.

Releasing my father from custody would not only reunite our family but also restore a beloved community business to the place where it belongs. We believe strongly in second chances, in compassion, and in recognizing the irreplaceable value one individual can bring to a community.

We urge ICE and the relevant authorities to review his case swiftly and fairly, taking into account his integral and long standing role in our community and family. By signing this petition, you help in spreading our plea for compassion and justice. Help us bring Zu home.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for taking the time to read our story, for signing, and for standing with my family. Your support gives us strength and is invaluable during this painful time.
