The Issue

Mario Coronado Juarez worked construction in Grand Rapids. According to local immigrant rights activist Gema Lowe, he was supporting his wife and three children back in Guatemala and saving to build them a home. On a Sunday morning this September, he died when the car he was driving slammed into a tree and burst into flames. It happened shortly after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers tried to pull him over.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says its officers called off the stop as soon as he sped away. It says they were nearly half a mile away when the crash happened. Maybe that's exactly what happened. But right now, the only public account comes from the agency whose own officers were involved. A family and a community deserve more than that.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has directed the Michigan State Police to investigate. U.S. Representative Hillary Scholten has formally asked ICE to preserve any video its officers recorded. Those are important first steps. Now we need to make sure they lead to real answers the public can see.

I'm asking the Michigan State Police to carry out a full, independent investigation and publish its findings. And I'm asking DHS and ICE to hand over every piece of body camera footage, dashcam video and radio communication from that morning to state investigators, and to release it to the public.

This isn't about taking sides. Whether you trust ICE or not, video and an open investigation protect everyone: the officers, the family, and the people of Grand Rapids who want to know the truth.

Sign the petition to demand a transparent investigation and the release of the video while the evidence is still fresh and answers are still possible.
