Matías Alejandro Pourrain wasn't crossing a border. He was flying from one Florida airport to Los Angeles with his soccer team, Miami United FC, on his way to play in a national championship final, when ICE agents detained him instead.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Pourrain, 34, entered the country legally in November 2019 and was authorized to stay six months, a period the agency says expired in May 2020. His brother and attorney tell a different part of the story: Pourrain had filed for asylum, had a Social Security number and work authorization, and was waiting on a scheduled immigration appointment when he was arrested at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on August 6.

"He was with an asylum permit, but he was with Social Security, with a work permit, he had all the papers in order, but he was waiting for the appointment," his brother Juan Pourrain told Todo Noticias, adding that agents appear to be targeting people with pending appointments.

His attorney, Regina Borges, said Pourrain was frightened after his arrest. "He was very scared, he cried a little too," she told Noticias Telemundo. He is currently held at an ICE processing center in Miramar, Florida, while his teammates and clubs, including Miami United FC and Club de Lyon FC, have publicly voiced support for him.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told Newsweek that Pourrain "will receive full due process" during his removal proceedings. Whatever the outcome of his case, that promise should mean something real: a fair, transparent hearing for someone who, according to his own attorney and family, was simply flying to a soccer game with the paperwork he believed he needed.
